Kansas City Sod –
Choosing the Right Type for Your Yard:
Kansas City is
known as being part of the transition region in the United States. Our
area presents special challenges for all lawn grasses.
Different climate zones – cool, warm, humid & drought – all come
together in our region.
Winters are too cold for warm season grasses to survive and summers are
too hot for cool season types.
A lawn is an
investment, so be sure to think about what you desire from your yard
before purchasing grass.
Fescue Grass –
If you’re placing
new sod in your yard, you’ll want to spend time choosing the best grass
type. Fescue grass is a good choice for the transition region of the
country. Fescue is one of the most popular grass types in most of
America. Fescue is a fine-blade grass that is a true green color. Are
you wondering if this is the right grass for your lawn? Consider the
pro’s and con’s of fescue grass before making your decision!
FESCUE -
PRO:
Fescue grass is tough
Fescue grass can
handle a lot of foot traffic without getting damaged. For this reason,
it’s used frequently for sports fields or other areas that might receive
a lot of traffic. If you have children, active dogs, or are simply
planning on spending a lot of time in your yard, you won’t have to worry
about wearing down your fescue grass.
FESCUE - PRO:
Fescue grass is drought resistant
Fescue is a
heat-tolerant cool-season grass. Fescue has a deep root system that
helps with drought and heat protection.
FESCUE - PRO:
Fescue grass is weed-resistant
Fescue grass is
tough and dense, making it more difficult for weeds to pop up. You may
see a weed here or there, but you shouldn’t expect fast-spreading
patches of clover anytime soon with fescue grass!
FESCUE - CON:
Fescue grass may require over-seeding
In Kansas City,
there’s more to maintaining your fescue grass than just frequent
watering. This cool-season grass may require over-seeding in the fall in
order to make up for the stress it faced in the summer.
FESCUE - CON:
Fescue grass may develop brown patches
Kansas City has
high humidity and fescue grass may attract brown patches. This can be
prevented by watering earlier in the day and avoiding watering in the
evening or at night.
